Kids can be overwhelmed by activities
Today there's a lot of pressure on parents to
give their children many "advantages." That can mean
music lessons, sports teams, church activities, and a great education
... all at the same time.
Some children are scheduled for 10 to 16 hours a day. While many enjoy
the whirl of lessons, homework, games, and practices, a growing number
are finding that the hyper-scheduled life is more than they can handle.
They are dangerously overloaded. Some simply decide to drop out of everything
but school for a time. Others suffer in silence, afraid to disappoint
their parents. Some of them are at the point of burnout.
Looking at a kid's list of activities doesn't necessarily tell the story.
Instead, you have to look at the child. Children under stress exhibit
a range of symptoms from headaches and asthma attacks to nail-biting
and sleeping problems. Like adults, they have different thresholds for
stress. What is too much activity for one may not be enough for another.
In Hyper-Parenting: Are You Hurting Your Child
by Trying Too Hard? (St. Martin's Press), psychiatrist and
co-author Alvin Rosenfeld says some families make firm rules,
such as one sport per child per season. If you say yes to
too many things, the whole family will pay the price, says
Rosenfeld.
Children are with us only a few years before they head out into their
own lives. Enjoy them, the doctor says. If your family is too busy to
hang out together, leave some empty spaces in the calendar. Unscheduled
time teaches kids to create, imagine, and see new possibilities.

Are Babies Born Smart? Can Early Intervention Help
Parents always hope for the best future for their children.
They try to get into the best schools, invest their money
in numerous musical and art lessons and start reading to
their infants before birth. Can any of this help your child
become a successful adult?
---------- How the Brain Works
Scientists now recognize that brain connections - called synapses
- are the building blocks for functions such as handling incoming
information, expressing emotions and learning language. Connections
are built both by genetics and environmental stimuli.
These paths lay down an internal 'wiring' system that will
affect your child's future abilities for learning and interacting.
'Nation' magazine reports that brain connections are being
wired at an extraordinarily rapid rate in the early years.
How can this possibly affect your children?
----------- Children Need Stimulation
The broader range of activities and experiences a child has
will increase the connections made. Clearly, the fact that
the greatest growth in connections is made when young indicates
that providing this stimulation early on will affect your child's
abilities later on.
Does this mean that parents with little money are not capable
of raising intelligent, well-balanced children? Does it mean
that all children with access to specialized education will
do better?
----------- Children Learn From Play
Educators believe that unstructured play is crucial to brain
development. When parent's guide every activity or bombard
their children with planned activities and lessons while leaving
out free play, they do not allow the creativity necessary for
social, mental and emotional skills.
----------- Parents Who Care
Although many would agree that children are strongly affected
by their peer group, it is actually parents who develop a child
to become caring, self-assured and well-balanced. Parent's
should never discount the benefits they are providing for their
children by being attentive and responsive to their children.
Children's development also requires emotional connections
with parents and others. When babies are not held, touched
and played with they actually form fewer connections in their
brain.
----------- Nature or Nurture
As many experts would acknowledge, brain development can be
influenced for good or bad by the upbringing of our children.
However, genetics also play a role that cannot be discounted.
While saying this, there are examples of individuals who appeared
to be born with a genetic disadvantage to their peers and yet
surpassed them due to the excellent parenting that was given
to them.
So, what can you do to determine how your children will turn
out? Focusing on parental care and attention is always the
best recommendation, and the least expensive. You cannot guarantee
how your children will fare, but they will always be more successful
with a supportive and loving family than without.

Influence of mothers is legendary
It's obvious that none of us would be here if we hadn't had a mother. But some
things mothers do are less obvious and have an enhancing effect on our lives.
Most
of us are aware of the influence our mothers had on us
It would be easy to think that mothers of years past had more time to spend with
their children. The truth is that their tasks were so physically demanding, and
they had to be so involved in family-raising chores, they had little time for
anything else. It was their work ethic, their honesty, and their straightforward
caring for their children that counted most. The same qualities are passed on
by today's mothers to the next generation. |

The Beauty Of Hardwood Floors
There are homes that adopt a modern look and, therefore, use modern
materials and designs. They may look a little futuristic and metallic,
using only the finest concrete, steel, or fiber glass available. However,
there are also those homes that stick to the conventional way of building;
that is, by using wood. And for purists like these, hardwood floors
are almost always a staple.
What is it about hardwood floors that never go out of style no matter
how the times and interior design principles change? Hardwood floors
offer a kind of natural sturdiness and reliability that cannot be found
in most home building materials. Sure, concrete is great, but nothing
beats a well finished hardwood floor to get that truly natural touch.
Hardwood floors are pretty expensive compared to most types of wood.
However, they last a whole lot longer with proper care. The types of
wood for such are oak and maple, but if you're under a budget, you might
want to work with the latter, as oak woods are relatively expensive.
Having a hardwood floor in your home is an investment, but it is a
one-time expenditure. This means you shell out a large amount only once
because all you have to do is make sure the floor is clean and its finish
its intact to for the next generations to benefit from it. Diligent
waxing will do; so will constant cleaning.
But, perhaps, the best benefit you can obtain from hardwood floors
is the natural look. You see, concrete gives off this cramped and stuffy
atmosphere. But if you see wood in your home, you won't feel as trapped.
Another is that no two hardwood floors are exactly alike. Because they
come from a living thing, you are assured that each plank is unique.
You can't help but admire the history of each hardwood floor plank,
and that's, perhaps, why it is comparatively pricey. If you want your
home to have this rich old-house feel, use hard wood for your flooring.
Surely, as human beings, we want some semblance of nature in our surroundings
to keep us sane. Too much artificial building materials might seem ho-hum
in the long run.
Finally, in order to enjoy the full benefits of hardwood floors, proper
care must be employed. They should be cleaned out constantly and maintained
with waxing and refinishings to protect their quality. Hardwood floors,
because they are organic, can decay if left unattended. But if treated
well, hard wood can last a lifetime, or five.
